Inside the "Neon Dreams" Session

The Velocity's latest single, "Neon Dreams," wasn't just another recording session. It was an exploration of how analog grit can meet modern digital precision.

When the band walked into Studio A, they had one goal: to create a track that felt like a cinematic journey through a rain-slicked city at midnight. As producers, our challenge was to translate that visual mood into a sonic reality.

Capturing the Foundation

We started with the drums. Marcus, the band's drummer, wanted a sound that was explosive yet tight. We set up in the main live room, using a combination of room mics and close-miked vintage snares. The secret sauce? Running the overheads through a pair of heavily driven 1176 compressors to get that signature "pump."

"The room just came alive as soon as we hit the tape. There's a certain way the low end settles when you're tracking to analog that you just can't duplicate perfectly in the box."

The Vocal Chain

For Elena's vocals, we chose a vintage Neumann U87 through a Neve 1073 preamp. We wanted every breath to be audible, every emotion to feel right in the listener's ear. We recorded multiple layers, building a lush harmonic bed that gave the chorus its massive, ethereal feel.

The Final Polish

Mixing took place on our SSL 4000 G. We stayed mostly out of the box, using outboard delays and reverbs to create the space. The result is a track that breathes with life and energy.
